By News Apr 15, 2021 | 5:48 AM

The Nebraska volleyball team will face Texas State this afternoon at the NCAA Tournament in Omaha. Texas State advanced yesterday with a four set win over Utah State. The 28th seeded Bobcats, who played in both the fall and spring, are boasting a record of 31-8. Their 39 total matches are more than any other team in the country. The Huskers, who are the tourney’s 5th seed, have been idle since a March 26th sweep of Michigan in Ann Arbor. First serve is this afternoon at 2:30.

The Creighton volleyball team saw their season come to an end yesterday in the tourney’s opening round, losing to Moorehead State in five sets. Creighton’s season ends with a 12-4 mark.

The Husker football team held their 8th practice of the spring yesterday morning. Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick, defensive coordinator Eric Chinander and several players spoke to the media after the workout. Lubick had high praise for senior QB Adrian Martinez. Martinez completed 71.5% of his passes last season—a single-season program record—but Lubick said he looking even sharper this spring. Chinander said the Huskers worked on red zone situations yesterday for the first time this spring. He said most of the base install of the defense is in. Now it’s about fine-tuning and filling out the defense’s depth chart.

On the injury front; Third-year safety Myles Farmer is practicing this spring, but is being held out of full-speed special teams work by the coaching staff as he makes his way back from what he called a “freak” ankle injury suffered last season. During warmups ahead of Nebraska’s road contest with Purdue on Dec. 5th, Farmer went up to high-point a ball and landed awkwardly in the turf. Because of that, he remains somewhat limited this spring..

You can find links to yesterday’s interviews at HUSKERMAX.com. The Huskers will host an open practice Saturday afternoon at 2:15. The Spring Game is Saturday, May 1st. Kickoff will be at 1:00.

The Nebraska baseball program has submitted a bid to host an NCAA regional. Head coach Will Bolt confirmed Wednesday morning the school put in a bid for Haymarket Park to be one of 16 four-team sites to begin the postseason tournament. The regional and super regional sites will be predetermined this year amid lingering pandemic health and safety concerns. Typically regional locations are chosen after conference tournaments in late May. The Huskers last hosted a regional in 2008.

The Nebraska men’s basketball program added another former top-100 recruit Wednesday. C.J. Wilcher, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard, is leaving Xavier for Nebraska. A four-star recruit coming out of high school by ESPN, 247Sports and Rivals, Wilcher was ranked No. 81 by ESPN in the class of 2020 and was a top-150 recruit according to all three services. Wilcher will have four seasons of eligibility at Nebraska.

The Huskers added more size to its highly-rated recruiting class with the signing of Oleg Kojenets to a National Letter-of-Intent on Wednesday. A 7-foot, 220-pound forward from Lithuania, Kojenets is a three-star recruit by both 247Sports and Rivals and was ranked in the top-100 nationally by 247Sports prior to his senior season. He is currently ranked among the top-200 players nationally, and the No. 25 center nationally, in the 247Sports Composite.

Former Oregon guard Jaz Shelley announced on Twitter that she is transferring to Nebraska. The 5-foot-9 Australian played two seasons for the Ducks. As a sophomore last season, Shelley played in 22 of the Ducks’ 24 games, making 11 starts. Shelley joins fellow Aussies Ruby Porter and Issie Bourne on the Husker roster. Center Kate Cain, the only senior on last season’s team, is the only Husker to publicly announce she won’t return to the team next year. Nebraska is also adding two freshmen guards, including Allison Weidner, who ESPN ranked the 80th overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class.

Starting next season, major college football and basketball players will be permitted to transfer one time before graduating without being required to sit out a year of competition. The NCAA Division I Council voted Wednesday to change the long-standing rule that has often deterred players in high-profile sports from switching schools. The council also voted to let the current dead period in recruiting in all sports expire June 1st.

Sydnee Tidwell has been hired as the next Head Coach of the Kearney Catholic softball program. A Nebraska native and former Loper, Tidwell replaces Jon Ruyle who has resigned to spend more time with his family, as he and his wife Nikki are expecting a baby later this year. Tidwell has been coaching for the Central Nebraska Softball organization since 2019 and is currently the head coach of the 10 and under team, while also facilitating the 8 and under program.
