KGFW Sports – Huskers Edged, Lopers Earn Crown and High School Update

The Husker men’s basketball team was edged at Northwestern yesterday, 79-78. The Huskers will be the 14th seed in the Big Ten Tournament at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and will face the 11th seed Penn State Wednesday night at approximately 7:45. The two teams split during the regular season.

Iowa rallied past the Husker women in Iowa City Saturday, 83-75. The Husker women are the 8th seed in the upcoming 13-team Big Ten Tourney in Indy, and will play the 9th seed seed Minnesota Wednesday morning at 10:00 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The 4th ranked Nebraska volleyball team improved to 9-1 on the season with a pair of sweeps at Illinois this past weekend. The Huskers host undefeated 19th ranked Ohio State this Friday and Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Friday’s match begins at 6:00, while Saturday’s contest starts at 8:00.

The Husker baseball team took 3-of-4 from Purdue in their season opener in Texas this weekend. The Huskers outscored the Boilermakers 26-to-8 during the four game set. The Huskers will face Ohio State and Iowa this weekend at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

In Husker football related news;

Nebraska received its first 2022 commitment Sunday, Columbus linebacker Ernest Hausmann. According to 247Sports Composite rankings he’s the 602nd best player in the country and the 5th best player in the state. He had several offers from other Power-Fives schools including Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Boston College and Arizona State.

14th ranked Creighton closed their regular season schedule with a 93-73 victory over Butler Saturday in Omaha. The Bluejays will be the No. 2 seed at this week’s Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Creighton will play Thursday at 5:00 the winner of the game between the No. 7 seed Xavier and the 10th-seed Butler.

For the first time since joining the Big East in 2013, Creighton had three players pick up All-Conference honors. Marcus Zegarowski was named First Team All-BIG EAST, Damien Jefferson made the Second Team and Denzel Mahoney earned an Honorable-Mention.

The Creighton women lost to Marquette in the Big East Tourney semi-finals yesterday, 64-59. The Bluejays, who were the tourney’s 6th seed,
close out the season with a 9-11 overall mark, they finished 6-7 in the Big East.

The 23rd ranked Creighton Volleyball team took two from the DePaul Blue Demons this past weekend in Omaha. The Bluejays travel to Indy this weekend for a pair of matches against the Butler Bulldogs.

The Creighton baseball team took 2-of-3 from UNO this past weekend in Omaha. The Bluejays will host South Dakota State in a three game series at TD Ameritrade Park this weekend.

The 14th ranked UNK women’s basketball team won their first ever MIAA Championship yesterday, topping 5th ranked Fort Hays State (in Hays) 57-51. With the victory, the Lopers secure the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It’s their first trip to the “Big “Dance in 12 years. The Lopers are the second seed in the Central Region and will play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Warrensburg, Missouri., against the winner of Minnesota-Duluth/Emporia State.

The 2021 DII women’s basketball championship tourney will begin with the regional quarterfinals this Friday. The semifinals will be played Saturday with the regional championships taking place on Monday, March 15th. Winners will advance to the Elite Eight, which will take place from March 23-26 at Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The 16th ranked UNK volleyball team closed out a season opening eight match road swing with a four set win over Washburn Friday in Topeka, Kansas. The Lopers will host Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western State this weekend at the Health and Sports Center.

The brackets for the 2021 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships were released late Friday. UNK is the only school to qualify its entire starting lineup for the national meet, which begins this Friday at the America’s Center Convention Complex in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Tri-City Storm closed out an eight game homestand by going 1-2 on the weekend. They split their two games with Waterloo, and lost to Sioux City yesterday 6-3. The Storm will open a three game road swing at Omaha Friday.
