Kearney Canal being drained early on September 8th

KEARNEY, Neb. – (KGFW) Nebraska Public Power District will be draining the Kearney Canal early… in just a few days.

“I was talking to our (NPPD) Water Systems Engineer out of North Platte. He indicated they would be shutting off the water supply to the Kearney Canal September 8th. The reason for that is doing maintenance on the canal system out at the Cottonmill Lake area.

In order to do that maintenance we have to have the canal dry for three to four weeks so you can access it with equipment. That’s the plan with maintenance shutting it down considerably earlier because usually it’s the end of October or middle of November before we shut it down,” says Kearney City Mayor Stan Clouse.

The early Fall closure could throw a wrench in some recreational canal users’ plans.
